The following information is provided for those who agreed to access and print the 'adds' form from the web. There is a brief version of tour highlights and independent vendor services, followed by meal plan information, a description of additional services, and a sample copy of the order form. Some of the information is repeated on other pages, but this is a good summary of important information so please take the time to read it. A printable version of this information as well as the order form can be found at the bottom of this page. We must recieve your order forms and funds no later than February 28, 2005. Complete rider handbooks will be handed out at registration and will also be posted on our website a few weeks prior to the ride.

RED HILLS TO THE SEA 2005: TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

Day 0 - Friday, March 18, 2005 ~ Early Registration/check in 3:00pm - 7:00pm - gymnasium of the "old" Monticello High School, NO site access before 2:00pm please ~ Only tent camping will be available on Friday

Day 1 - Saturday, March 19, 2005 ~ Registration/check-in 9:30am - 6:00pm - gymnasium of the "old" Monticello High School, 555 S Water Street (also known as 555 Tiger Lane)
Miles: 12 / 35 around Monticello - There will be 12 and 35 mile rides offered around Monticello. Guided walking tours of the Historical District and "Ghost Tours" are also available. Or, venture out on your own to the cafes, shops, Chamber sponsored beer garden or the Monticello State Theatre that await you downtown.

  • Riders Meeting (ATTENDANCE REQUIRED) 7:15pm -8:15pm - Learn about ride updates, important notices, safety issues, etc., in the "Old" Monticello High School auditorium.

Day 2 - Sunday, March 20, 2005 ~ Late Registration/check in 6:00am - 8:00am ~ Monticello to Quincy
Miles: 69 - This will be our first travel day and you'll start things off with a ride through the rolling hills of the rural, North Florida countryside. On the way to Quincy you will pass through Havana, a quaint Florida town. Take time to check out its cafes, boutiques, art galleries and antique shops before you continue on to Quincy.

Day 3 - Monday, March 21, 2005 ~ Quincy to Blountstown
Miles: 50 - The ride to Quincy will feature a rest stop at Torreya State Park. You'll have an opportunity to tour the historic Gregory House (located within the park), which showcases life in an 1849 plantation home.

Day 4 - Tuesday, March 22, 2005 ~ Blountstown to Apalachicola
Miles: 75-100 - You'll ride through part of the largest National Forest in Florida on your way to Apalachicola today. There will be some time for quiet contemplation on this leg of the route as you head for the Gulf of Mexico. A FREE* lunch in Sumatra at the 40 point (65 mile for century riders) will reward you for the long miles on today's ride. *FREE for all registered cyclists; optional for non-riders and vendors, see meals section.

Day 5 - Wednesday, March 23, 2005 ~ Layover in Apalachicola
Miles: 0-42 - You can spend the day in town enjoying the shops and eateries or taking a self-guided walking/cycling tour of the historic houses. Those choosing to ride will be going out to St. George Island State Park to enjoy miles of undeveloped beaches, majestic dunes, bay forests, sandy coves and salt marshes. It will be 21 miles out and back (42 miles round trip), with shorter (turn around) options available.

Day 6 - Thursday, March 24, 2005 ~ Apalachicola to Sopchoppy
Miles: 50 - Most of today's ride (40 of the 50 miles) will hug the beautiful shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico. We'll pass through Eastpoint, a small fishing community known for its oyster harvesting and Carrabelle Beach where we'll have a rest stop. You will also have the option of touring the FSU Marine Science Center, the final rest stop of the day. We'll end up in Sopchoppy, home of the world famous "Worm Grunting Festival".

Day 7 - Friday, March 25, 2005 ~ Sopchoppy to Monticello
Miles: 62 - Our last day takes us from Sopchoppy back to Monticello. The first rest stop will be at the Wakulla Station Trail Head of the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State trail. An optional loop will take you to Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, home of one of the world's largest and deepest fresh water spring. There will also be optional stops at Natural Battlefield Historic State Park and Wacissa Springs. Directions to these optional stops will be provided. Free end of ride lunch for all registered Bike Florida cyclists (optional for non-riders and vendors). Shuttles to airport will be provided for those with reservations only.

  • RIDER PACKETS containing your ride handbook, rider number, maps, etc., will be distributed at registration. The ride booklet will be posted on our website a few weeks prior to the ride.

THE BIKE DETAIL SPECIALTY SERVICES For over a decade riders have enjoyed a variety of services offered by The Bike Detail, including bicycle cleaning, gourmet coffee, lounge chairs, towels, cell phone charging and now Fruit Smoothies. Avoid lines at registration by making reservations through The Bike Detail website: www.1ess.biz. On site sign up will also be available.

BIKE SUPPORT MECHANICS have advised that repairs on the tour will not be free this year; prices will be reasonable. Make sure you have your bike tuned up at your local shop before heading to the event: bicycleshop@ncis.com

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS

Rolling "Road I" option: $25 Details about the course content can be found on the League of American Bicyclists web site www.bikeleague.org, or by contacting the Florida Bicycle Association. E-mail laura@floridabicycle.org. The course will be approximately 2 hours daily. You can also visit FBA's website (www.floridabicycle.org) to learn more about it.

Vehicle Permit: $25 Required for every vehicle that will be traveling with the tour. Included in the non-rider fee.

Monticello/Airport Shuttles: Shuttles will be provided from the Tallahassee airport to the ride start on Saturday, March 19. Shuttles will again be provided back to the airport on Friday, March 25, from the ride ending location ("Old" Monticello high school). The shuttles will depart the airport on Saturday (3/19) at 12:00pm, 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Return shuttles on Friday (3/25) will leave the high school at 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 5:00pm. The pick up location at the Tallahassee Airport will be outside of the baggage area, in front of the terminal. Please indicate on your adds form the shuttle time you desire and whether or not you will have your bike with you, as space is limited. The fee will be $10 each way, per person (THIS FEE WILL BE COLLECTED ON-SITE). Reservations required.

Jersey: If you would like a jersey from this year's ride, it is best to pre-order. Additional jerseys will be available for purchase, but quantity and sizes will be very limited due to expense!

Below is a color sample of the jersey design: (Just in case you have a small monitor, the fish on the bike is wearing an 'oyster helmet' and the little, brown, squiggly thing on the collar and crawling out of the pocket is a worm).

BAGGAGE INFORMATION

Baggage - There will be a 2-bag limit for each rider. There is a 40 lb. WEIGHT LIMIT PER BAG, so please keep this in mind when you are packing!! The drivers will NOT allow overweight bags on the trucks! Do not tie things to the outside of your bag, such as bulky lawn chairs, tents, etc. No coolers are allowed on the baggage truck. You will be responsible for loading your own bag on the luggage trucks before 8:00am on each travel day. When loading your luggage, carry your bags all the way to the front of the truck and stack them on top of each other so that others will be able to fit their bags.

Motel Shuttles - No bikes or baggage will be allowed on the motel shuttles. Contact Bubba for baggage shuttle service. Bikes can be locked at the overnight camp sites. Overnight security will be on duty, but bring a secure lock.
