Highlands County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 98,786. Its county seat is Sebring. Highlands County was named because of the terrain in the area. There is a lot to see and do in this part of Florida — such as visiting some of these historic sites: Fort Basinger, an area used during the Seminole Wars, showcases the cowboy community that used to populate the area as well as the steamboats that used to run up and down the Kissimmee River. The Lake Placid Historical Society Depot Museum displays historical clothes, documents, and furnishings used during the early 1900s.
