What is Florida’s Emancipation Day? On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing enslaved people in the Southern states. It was not until May 20, 1865, that the state of Florida was finally freed, and the Emancipation Proclamation was actually in effect.
